Beeston community works project is located to the South of Leeds City Centre. Much of Beeston traditional industry and fabrication works have closed leading to high levels of deprivation, with indicators for health and economic activity lower than the rest of the City. The decline of economic opportunities has led to high levels of empty housing and unoccupied commercial buildings. Most of the housing stock is late Victorian and early C-20th terraced housing.
The project proposed building three new industrial/commercial units on existing terrace footprints to provide business opportunities and accommodation to local residents and the wider community of Leeds. Smaller units would be available to rent on an hourly/daily/weekly basis for budding entrepreneurs to support the growth and development of their new business ideas. Medium and large sized units would be available to entice established businesses and people back into Beeston to help improve the physical, social and economic conditions of the neighbourhood. Dedicated units and new garden would be given to the community as resources for learning, networking and bringing people back together.
