Heather cottage is located in the conservation area of Totland, on the Isle of Wight. The original cottage dates to the mid C19th with an additional single story side extension added in the 1980’s. The single story extension is currently used as an elevated sun deck with views of the sea and north west coast line. The client wants to add an outside room on the deck that can be used throughout the year. The new room will provide additional leisure accommodation for relaxation, entertaining and star gazing (at night)

Due to our location in the conservation area and area of outstanding natural beauty, the strategy has been to design a light weight glass box that will reflect the surrounding landscape on its surface enabling it to mirror its natural context.

Using glass on all five surfaces of the box provides the client with 360- degree views of the landscape, stars and sky. Solar controlled glass has been used to provide thermal comfort and shading throughout the year.
