The renovation at Miles Cottage will create an energy efficient home in the historic village of Shrewton nestled in the Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England. The new design fuses traditional forms and local materials in an elegant and modern way.

The development of a simple plan and section will deliver a house of exceptional quality whilst at the same time bringing together a comprehensive range of passive and active energy-saving features in a well-considered, thoughtful assembly of light-filled spaces, suited to 21st century living.

A sustainable and robust deliverable design will form the bedrock of the design approach.

The renovation will feature a new air source heat pump, solar panels and will be constructed to exceed building regulation standards of energy efficiency.

The development will be firmly rooted in the history of the area through the use of snapped-and-knapped luminescent flint (used for cladding and to create external and internal walls), red brick will be carefully placed to accentuate existing elements and to enhance all elevations. The existing detailing of the house will be reflected by these material choices.

Miles Cottage will be a fusion of architectural thinking, vernacular detailing and pragmatic sustainability features.

Views will be composed and considered. The quality of light will be superb and the sense of proportion and flow will provide a series of spaces that are inspiring and transformative.
